Reconciling Relationships

Pygmalion and Galatea represents hope to some viewers and hurt to others. We can reconcile this dichotomy by acknowledging both views. That isn’t a cop-out. We aren’t choosing sides or determining innocence. We’re not ranking degrees of rightness either; in relationships, everyone’s feelings can be true. One viewpoint might be more forceful than another; one might simply be louder but not more correct. When untangling relationship problems, the goal is not to play judge and jury but detective and moderator. We can do this by diligently gathering as much information as possible, opening the door to input from others, including ancillary players, and acknowledging all positions. This means lots of listening intently and facing tough choices.

Suppose you are a teacher presenting the story of Pygmalion to students. What should you do, knowing that the poem and the painting can be interpreted in completely opposite ways? Simply refusing to discuss the work because it is problematic isn’t the best option. And shying away from difficult issues does not inspire anyone. In fact, on most troublesome subjects (infidelity, racism, insolvency, global pandemics), shying away from the problems only causes more or more severe problems. To solve this particular problem as a case in point, let’s recall what we’ve learned from artists about confronting ambiguity, tackling thorny conflicts, and making plans:
